Anthony Joseph "Joe" Monahan, 72, an active Pleasanton CA community member for nearly 30 years, died peacefully due to complications of late stage Alzheimer's disease Saturday July 21, 2007 in the loving presence of family in Valencia, CA.
Joe, a person of splendid humor and kind wisdom, was born and educated in Pittsburgh PA, attending Saint Vincent's College and joining the pioneering team of early computer industry innovators, Digital Equipment Corporation. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving valiantly in the field as a firefighter and on the field as an USAF Football halfback. When Joe retired from professional endeavors and volunteer organizations such as Pleasanton Rotary, he enjoyed time spent with the SIR's Golfing Club, at the VFW early morning gatherings, and afternoon services at Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Joe gracefully maneuvered the final stages of his disease, forever maintaining his sense of optimism and gratitude. He will be remembered fondly by friends and devoted family members whose lives have been brightened by the light of his smile.
Joe Monahan was the son of Irish born James and Mary (Killeen) Monahan, of Pittsburgh, PA. Joe is survived by wife of 47 years, Carol Monahan, presently of Valencia, CA; son, Michael Monahan, of Sunol, CA; son, Joseph Monahan, of San Ramon, CA; daughter Lisa Aust and her husband Jacob Aust, of Valencia, CA; three siblings: Mary Fallon of San Diego, CA and Kathleen Martin and James Monahan of Pittsburgh, PA. Joe is survived by four grandchildren: Molly, Lilly, Zane and Olivia.
A memorial service will be held Saturday August 11th, 2007 at Saint Augustine's Catholic Church, 3999 Bernal Avenue, Pleasanton, CA, at 1:00 PM. The family request that memorials be made to the Santa Clarita Adult Day Health Center, 22903 Soledad Canyon Road, Santa Clarita CA 91350.
